Hi folks,
As well as keeping the pirates at bay and keeping legal fishing vessels up to scratch, our fishery protection vessel Pharos SG occasionally deploys drifting buoys for the South African Weather Service. These drift around, sending weather information back to the South Africans by satellite, so that they can predict the weather that is coming.
You can see the present positions of the buoys at this website. If you click on a buoy's entry in the table below you will see a track of the past ten days movements. It is not only the SAWS buoys that show up on this map. Some ships also contribute, including the BAS ships (in summer).
