Andrew Sinclair on "Frank Wild's Last Journey"

Hello,

I lived on South Georgia from May - Nov 1992 as the telecommunications engineer initially supporting the Worcester and Sherwood Forresters and later the Queen's Regiment (who amalgamated with the Royal Hampshire Regiment whilst we were on South Georgia in 1992 to form the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment).

I was recently listening to BBC Radio 4 and happened across an edition of Crossing Continents regarding Frank Wild. Information from the BBC website is copied below.

"Sir Ernest Shackleton has a heroic place in the annals of Antarctic exploration, famously for his expedition on the aptly-named Endurance in 1914. He intended to cross over the Antarctic landmass. Instead, his ship became stuck in ice which eventually crushed it. Shackleton and his crew made a desperate voyage in three small boats to Elephant Island, where they split up. The men on the island were left under the command of Shackleton's Number 2, Frank Wild. Shackleton and a small team sailed 800 miles to South Georgia, from where they mounted a rescue mission for Wild's group.
Nearly a century on, reporter Karen Bowerman joins a group of Wild's relatives retracing his extraordinary journey to the southern seas. They are bearing Wild's ashes, which they bury next to Shackleton, on South Georgia.
Producer: John Murphy."

The URL is http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b018grht

I read a lot about Sir Earnest and his number 2, Frank Wild, whilst during my stay at KEP and this excellent programme reminded me of the most magical experiences during the South Georgia winter of 1992. Sadly, I didn't keep in contact with the others dozen or so soldiers and marines that were there at the same time but my memories are still very fresh, even the call-sign and the ham radio station we operated in our spare time. It was no surprise that we were inundated with QSL request with a call-sign VP8 CLL and were very thankful to the BT Portishead station who offered to route our distant HF radio calls direct from KEP (using an inverted V antenna using around 100W) to loved ones back in UK using the telephone network in the days long before satellite communications was the norm.

Regards

Andy

GSGSSI have released the following.
Pat

Dear All,

The Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands has produced a discussion document that comprises the history or reindeer on South Georgia, a summary of the impacts of reindeer on native species and habitats and a discussion of management options. This document is available from:

Comments are sought on the management options for reindeer on South Georgia.

After reading the discussion document, we encourage individuals to fill in a brief questionnaire available from the link below. We stress that filling in this questionnaire is optional, and is not intended to replace more general comments, which are very welcome. Organisations need not fill in the questionnaire, though please feel free to alert your members to its location.

A king penguin has just laid an egg and is now incubating it on King Edward Point. Conveniently it has decided to start its family right in front of webcam 1 so you can see it on http://www.sgisland.gs/index.php/%28h%29South_Georgia_webcam? though how long it will stay there is anybody's guess.

Dear All,

Following on from the Environmental Management Plan, published ten years ago, and the update 'Plan For Progress' of five years ago, the FCO and GSGSSI have set out a strategy for the next five years.

You can see more details on the FCO website at:
http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/news/latest-news/?view=News&id=458810682

and the GSGSSI website at:
http://www.sgisland.gs/index.php/%28g%29SGSSI_Strategy_2010-2015?usesk

Minister for the Overseas Territories, Henry Bellingham, has commented that, “The publication of this strategy is an important step in ensuring the future security of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, and illustrates the importance the Government attaches to our Overseas Territories. It sets out our priorities for action over the next five years and in particular highlights the environmental value of the islands which are internationally recognised for their biological importance.”

Season's greetings from rainy SG. We'll have some of that snow when you have finished with it.

Dear all,

With the elly season kicking off, now is a good time to watch the webcams.

There are two at King Edward Point, and one on Bird Island.

KEP Webcam 1 and KEP Webcam 2 can be seen on the GSGSSI website at http://sgisland.gs/index.php/%28h%29South_Georgia_webcam and webcam 2 at http://sgisland.gs/index.php/%28h%29South_Georgia_Webcam2

There's a service out there collecting the Webcam 1 images and making little animations for each day at http://zeitcam.com/showcam.php?cam=southgeorgia so we tend not to move that camera about much. However, we (Sarah mostly) do move webcam 2 around a little to find something of interest.

The Bird Island webcam is at http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/images/webcams/bi/index.php

Dear all,

GSGSSI have published a new Gazette with the latest law - the Prohibited Areas Ordinance, which makes it illegal to approach the old whaling stations at Leith, Stromness, Husvik and Prince Olaf (sic).

see http://www.sgisland.gs/download/SGGSI%20Gazette%20No%201%20dated%2024%20September%202010.pdf

Hi folks,

As well as keeping the pirates at bay and keeping legal fishing vessels up to scratch, our fishery protection vessel Pharos SG occasionally deploys drifting buoys for the South African Weather Service. These drift around, sending weather information back to the South Africans by satellite, so that they can predict the weather that is coming.

You can see the present positions of the buoys at this website. If you click on a buoy's entry in the table below you will see a track of the past ten days movements. It is not only the SAWS buoys that show up on this map. Some ships also contribute, including the BAS ships (in summer).

http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/shiplocations.phtml?lat=-54&lon=-36&radius=500

You can also track the JCRoss:
